Seals may be lost or thrown away. Wax seals of unknown owners will be conserved in a collection or, if lost or thrown away, rot and disappear. Lost pieces of lacquer seals can be found during an excavation. At present their identification is based on human memory. In the near future a scan of a piece of an unknown seal can be identified by comparing it with a digital collection of seals – a sigillotheque.
